History
Epsom Salts was discovered in 1618 on a dry summers day on Epsom Common by a farmer called Henry Wicker, Henry found a source of water which his cattle refused to drink from.
This water proved to have medicinal properties, first used externally to cure sores but later found to have a laxative effect when drunk. Epsom rapidly became a prosperous Spa town where visitors came from a far to visit its miraculous healing waters.
The original spring/well can still be found today on The Wells Estate on Epsom Common, the water from this well was analysed in 1989 by Epsom & Ewell borough Council and found to have the same salutary properties as in 1640.
The production of Epsom Salts has become a global phenomenon, with its magnesium and sulphate components perfectly supplementing mineral-deficient modern lifestyles.
